SIALKOT, Oct 12 (APP):- High Commissioner of Canada to Pakistan Mr. Perry Calderwood has said thatPakistan and Canada have huge scope to work together to further strengthen economic relations, saying that the private sectors of the two countries should promote trade, investment and economic partner-ship in the areas of mutual interests.

 

In a meeting with the business community held at the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) Canadian High Commissioner said that Canada was keen to boost the mutual trade ties with Pakistan, pledging to make efforts to remove all the hurdles from the way of promoting the mutual trade between Pakistan and Canada.

 

Canadian HC pledged full support and technical assistance to ensure the easy access of Pakistan business community to international Canada trade markets. He vowed to make all out sincere efforts to boost mutual trade ties between Pakistan and Canada, saying that the time was ripe to further strengthen these mutual trade ties. He said that both of the countries have been enjoying the cordial trade relations.

 

Mr. Perry Calderwood said that there was a huge potential and scope to promote bilateral trade between Pakistan and Canada, saying that the Cananda was also making all out sincere efforts to establishing strong Business-to-Business contacts and People-to-People linkages between Pakistan and Canada.

 

High Commissioner of Canada said that there was a huge potential and scope to increase the mutual trade volume from US $ 1 Billion to at least US$ 3 Billion between Pakistan and Canada, saying that now both Pakistan and Canada should make some stepped up and concrete measures to develop its mutual trade opportunities and increase the trade and investment especially in Pakistan.

 

He also vowed to develop the strong business-to-business links between the businessmen of Canada and Pakistan, saying that this step would also help to explore the mutual trade potential between the two countries.

 

Earlier, in his welcome address, SCCI Acting President Abdul Waheed said that Canada and Pakistan have enjoyed most cordial relations since the independence of Pakistan. Canada the land of Maple Leafs, Stunning Landscapes and enormous inventions has always been a close partner of Pakistan in terms of bilateral trade and socio economic development.

 

Acting President said that the Canada’s expertise in industrial & economic sectors and human welfare index is among the best and we wish to benefit from Canada’s capabilities and skills in the fields of capacity building of export and manufacturing sectors and transfer of technology and knowledge base to the SMEs.

 

He said, it is encouraging to note that both countries have stepped up efforts to increase bilateral trade, investment and countless measures have been taken to ensure that this step is successful. Total tade volume between two countries is around USD 1(B) with balance of trade in favour of Canada which we reckon could be conveniently enhanced for which Chamber of Commerce can play an important role by facilitating frequent interaction of private sectors.

 

Acting President revealed that there was no doubt to say that Sialkot made Sports Goods, Surgical Instruments, Leather Products, Gloves of all sorts, Textiles Items, Sports Wear, Martial Arts Uniforms & Accessories, Musical Instruments, Kitchen Ware, Hollow Ware, Knives, Cutlery items and Military Uniform Badges etc. could find a good market in Canada. The main hurdle is direct link between business communities of both countries. There is lack of communication and proper marketing.

 

SCCI Acting President stressed that both the countries should facilitate single country trade exhibitions and encourages frequent exchanges of trade delegations. The procedure for issuance of visas to businessmen should be relaxed and business to business linkages should be encouraged and expanded.

Earlier, Canadian HC also visited the leading industrial units in Sialkot, amid tight security. He witnessed the internationals standard craftsmanship of Sialkot based artisans..
