CJP expresses resolve to protect democracy

ISLAMABAD, Feb 03 (APP): Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar has expressed the resolve to protect democracy.

Addressing the meeting of National Judicial Policy Making Committee in Islamabad on Saturday, he said he will never allow derailment of democratic system.

Conceding that the judiciary made some mistakes in the past, the chief justice said that in order to move forward, the institution will have to hold itself accountable as well.

The chief justice said that the judges should serve the masses with passion and honesty and without any fear.

He pointed out that the judiciary is an important organ of the state and it has to fulfill its responsibilities. He said it is our duty to defend fundamental rights. He said the apex court has taken suo motu notices in order to ensure fundamental rights.

The Chief Justice said that constitution is the supreme document whilst parliament, which frames laws, is the supreme institution. He said we are subservient to the laws formulated by the parliament. He said the judges should have full grasp over the laws.

The Chief Justice said that the judiciary is bound to decide cases in accordance with the laws. He said we will not do anything that is in conflict with the constitution.

Addressing a separate meeting attended by the judges, the Chief Justice said that China Pakistan Economic Corridor project is a very important project for the future of the country. He said issues pertaining to CPEC must be resolved expeditiously.
