PAC informed Rs246.9 billion recoverable from energy defaulters


ISLAMABAD, May 10 (APP): The Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly met here Wednesday with Syed Khurshid Ahmad Shah in the chair at the Parliament House.

Committee discussed the pended paras related to Ministry of Water and Power involving amount more than Rs50 million.

The committee was informed that huge amount of Rs246.9 billion is receivable from dead defaulters.

In DISCOs an amount of Rs246.9 billion was recoverable from energy defaulters both government and private.

Audit emphasized expeditious recovery of government arrears at source through adjuster and private arrears by accelerating departmental efforts besides fixing the responsibility.

Principal Accounting Officer or Secretary Water and Power Naseem Khokhar said that there is lot to be done we have to expedite our recovery process.

He said, “We also want to recover this amount as early as possible so we can settle our balance sheet”.

Members of the committee were of the view that there should be shift or divert in the generation policy of electricity from oil.

Senator Sherry Rehman said that recoveries/receivables are not satisfactory and circular debt is increasing with passage of every day.
She said PAC should give time line to Ministry on recoveries/receivables and its enforceability.

Secretary Water and Power informed the committee that different entities have different performance related to recoveries.

He urged the committee to give time for presentation on the issues of receivables and line losses.
He told the committee that present ratio of recoveries is 93% adding that problem arises due to previous recoveries.
Senator Azam Swati said that production and consumption data of electricity should bring before the committee so that committee could analyse it.
