Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai meets PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

NEW YORK (USA) Sep 21 (APP): Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai called on Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi here on Thursday.

During the meeting, Malala Yousafzai reiterated her commitment for promotion of education in Pakistan, particularly the female education. Referring to the commitment of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for expanding education in Pakistan, she expressed hope that the Prime Minister would become champion of education in Pakistan.

Appreciating the resolve of Malala Yousafzai for promotion of education in Pakistan, particularly the female education, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi reiterated his commitment for promotion of education in Pakistan. The Prime Minister said that education is at the forefront agenda of the present government as no investment would yield dividends without investing in the education sector.

During the last four years improvement has been witnessed in the field of education in Pakistan, the Prime Minister said. However, the government is cognizant of the challenges in the education sector, and I have written to the Chief Ministers of the  provinces for working together for promotion of education in the country,  the Prime Minister said. The Prime Minister noted with satisfaction that the Punjab government has done great job through its education program in collaboration with DFID that has resulted in significantly reducing the drop outs while increasing the enrollment. However, we still have a lot of work to do to address the gender inequality and infrastructure issues, the Prime Minister said.

The government is now focusing on syllabus to make history, mathematics and sciences as core part of the syllabus to promote the analytical skills of the students. The Prime Minister further said that the government is also in contact with NGOs and the provincial goernments to achieve this objective.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that massive increase has been made by the present government in the Higher Education budget. I believe that not only the quantity but also the quality of education that matters, the Prime Minister stated.
