PM chairs meeting of Cabinet Committee on Energy

Islamabad, 01 Feb (APP): A meeting of Cabinet Committee on Energy was held on Thursday at Prime Minister’s Office with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in chair.
The meeting reviewed in detail the report on validation of energy and demand forecasting as prepared by NTDC and evaluated by an international consultant engaged through the World Bank. According to the report, Pakistan will overcome power shortage from 2017 onwards upto year 2030. Prime Minister stated that although remarkable progress has been achieved in power sector during the last three years, there was a need to constantly monitor demand and supply situation keeping in view the anticipated high GDP growth scenario in the coming years.
HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) Matiari-Lahore transmission line project was also discussed during the meeting. The proposed project with evacuation capacity of 4000 MW is being planned to ensure evacuation of power from the new generation planned in southern part of country to the load centers in middle of the country. The Prime Minister stressed upon the need to synchronize the completion of the transmission line with expected completion of the power projects in Thar as well as other projects in South of the country.
Amendments in Renewable Energy Policy 2006 also came under discussion during the meeting. It was decided that proposals for new tariff will be developed based on best international models so that most competitive tariff are achieved in order to lower the basket price of electricity.
