\nSharif Friday said Pakistan, as full member of the Shanghai
\nCooperation Organization (SCO), would strive further to achieve the
\ncollective objectives of the organization for regional cooperation,
\nconnectivity and economic prosperity.
\nIn his address at the summit of Heads of State Council of the
\nSCO, the prime minister said Pakistan pursued a policy of peaceful
\nneighbourhood and stressed upon promotion of peace and harmony for
\nthe future generations.
\n\u201cAs leaders, we should leave a legacy of peace and amity for
\nour future generations; not a toxic harvest of conflict and
\nanimosity. Instead of talking about counterweights and containment,
\nlet us create shared spaces for all,\u201d he added.
\nThe prime minister said SCO\u2019s goals resonated with Pakistan\u2019s
\nnational ethos; and so do the core values of the Shanghai Spirit and
\nthe SCO Charter with their own quest for a peaceful neighborhood.
\nHe said with its expansion, the SCO has been transformed into
\ntrue transcontinental organization. The SCO provided sheet anchor
\nrole for regional progress and prosperity in view of the global
\nchanges. \u201cIn coming decades, it would serve as a strong link between
\nthe Asia-Pacific, East Asia, West Asia and the Atlantic region,\u201d he
\nadded.
\nPrime Minister Nawaz Sharif said the SCO gave them a powerful
\nplatform for partnerships to promote peace, build trust, and spur
\neconomic development for shared prosperity.
\n\u201cMoreover, it helps us all combat terrorism, reduce arms race,
\neliminate poverty, fight epidemics, deal with natural disasters,
\ntackle climate change, and ensure water security,\u201d he noted.
\nHe said Pakistan successfully fought the twin evils of
\nterrorism and extremism, and his government brought about a complete
\nturnaround in the economic situation of the country.
\nPakistan fully endorsed the SCO\u2019s resolve to fight the twin
\nevils of terrorism and extremism, he said.
\n\u201cPakistan has fought its own fierce war against international
\nterrorism and violent extremism; and with the grace of God, we have
\nbeen able to turn around the security and economic situation in our
\ncountry,\u201d he added.
\nPakistan was diligently implementing China Pakistan Economic
\nCorridor (CPEC ), a flagship of One Belt One Road initiative, he
\nsaid, adding it would be beneficial for the entire SCO members.
\nCongratulating India on the full member status of SCO along
\nwith Pakistan, the prime minister said that it was a historic day
\nfor Pakistan and the SCO members as well and thanked the founding
\nmembers including China, Russia and others for their staunch support
\nto Pakistan to become its full-fledged member.
\nHe said Pakistan was not unfamiliar with the SCO mechanism but
\nhad developed deep relations by attending its summits and worked
\nclosely at its different forums.
\nHe said Pakistan came prepared and eager to learn from the
\nfounding members in the changing international environment.
\nThe summit was attended by heads of member states including
\nPresident of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of China Xi
\nJinping, President Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev, President of
\nRussia Vladimir Putin, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and
\nPresident of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
\nPresident of Afghanistan Muhammad Ashraf Ghani, President of
\nBelarus Alexandar Lukashenko, President of Mangolia Tsakhiagiin
\nElbegdorj and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were also present
\nduring the summit.<\/p>\n
