Doubles victory gives Pakistan an unassailable lead over Iran

ISLAMABAD, Feb 4 (APP): Pakistan have won their Davis Cup tie first round against Iran with Aqeel Khan and Aisam-ul-Haq storming to a straight-sets win in the doubles at Sports Complex Islamabad.
Following the singles success on Friday, Aqeel and Aisam posted a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 win over Alborz Akhavan and Anoosha Shahgholi on Saturday to give Pakistan an unassailable 3-0 lead.
The victory sealed Pakistan a Davis Cup second round against Vietnam or Hong Kong, China.
Alborz and Anoosha had no answer to experienced Pakistani combination, Aqeel and Aisam got early edge in first set with irrecoverable 6-1 lead, which sealed the physiological victory over Iranians and maintained till third set.
Pakistani captain Malik Rashid said it was a fantastic team effort. “The boys came out and did all the hard preparation and it’s nice to know that all the hard work paid off,” Rashid said. “It’s been a fantastic team effort and I couldn’t be prouder of these guys.”
Expressing his hope to host second round in home Malik Rashid said that grass court is Ideal for us, we have beaten all top teams in Asia and we are looking forward to continue the momentum.
Pakistan top seed player Aisam-ul-Haq said that it was a wonderful felling to play in front of home crowd, he said hosting such event in country boost the morale of junior players.
