Govt is fully committed to freedom of press: President Mamnoon


KARACHI, April 15 (APP): President Mamnoon Hussain has said
that the government was fully committed to the freedom of press and
pays attention towards the problems of the working journalists to
enable them to perform their duties with peace of mind.
He was addressing the elected office bearers of the Karachi Press
Club (KPC) and senior representatives of the journalist community at
the Governor House here on Saturday.
Sindh Governor, Muhammad Zubair, Information Minister of the
Punjab, Mujtaba Shuja ur Rehman were prominent among those also
present on the occasion.
The President handed over a cheque amounting to
Rs. 25 million on behalf of the Punjab Chief Minister, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif for financial assistance to the KPC.
He said that he was happy that with this gesture and a strong
representation of Punjab Government present here, the old ties
between the Punjab Chief Minister and the KPC are being renewed.
Mamnoon Hussain hoped that in the future as well such a pleasant
gesture would continue and more such good actions would also come to
the fore.
He said that this occasion also proves that the state and the
government of Pakistan fully believe in the freedom of the press and
facilitating the working journalists and the media practitioners to
perform their duties with the best of their abilities and peace of
mind to disseminate the required information among the masses.
The President also lauded the KPC for maintaining its democratic
traditions since its inception decades ago and has been holding its
elections regularly to ensure that its affairs are run by the elected
representatives of the KPC’s council members.
He also praised the role as well as the contributions of the KPC
towards furthering the cause of democracy and democratic values in the
President Mamnoon Hussain said that it augurs well that democracy is
taking roots in the country and the institutions were contributing their bit
towards strengthening democracy.
`We have to make this even stronger the democratic values so as
to speed up the pace of national development and progress with a view
that common mans’ problems are resolve and people live a life of
prosperity”, he added.
The office bearers of the KPC and its senior members were also
present on the occasion.
